I am a married woman in her 30s... how awful does that sound - ok, how about... I am a sarcastic 32 year old married woman with a bun in the oven. I have a fantastic dog who has an evil pet cat. My husband and I bought a house 2 years ago and have been doing major renovations since then.

To quote my friend Larry.... "coffee's stupid".

That's my favorite quote of the day.
Yesterday's quote was "goddammit, do something useful and hold my hair back!".

It's alive... and kicking.

22 weeks +5 days pregnant

Yesterday I felt the baby move - with my hand! I've been feeling him moving sporadically for a couple of weeks but so far it was all internal. Yesterday I felt it on the outside. This is exciting news and now J can hopefully feel him too. So far the kid is gunshy - like a deer in the headlights when a foreign hand is on the belly, but soon, soon, my pretty... we'll sneak up on him yet.

My folks are here and renovating up a storm! It's great. My dad helped me do the troublesome plumbing for the new and expensive toilet and has built a wall already. Today he is building the counter area for the sink to sit on. I'm so excited by the progress and the possibilities. This has given me the kick I needed to continue on my own after they leave. I'll have this bathroom done by September if it kills me. It's really hard to bend now as the belly is remarkably hard and doesn't squoosh out of the way when I bend over so I fear I had better get stuff done on the double quick or I'll never be able to bend over and do the tiling...

J and I are off to Monterey next week for a holiday (well, holiday for me, a conference for him). After that relaxing trip, I will dive headlong into finishing that bathroom - I promise.

The first cut is the deepest

21 weeks + 5 days

We had our dr. appointment yesterday and again all was well -heart beat is now 156 beats per minute - he's really ticking away in there!

Now that we know it's a boy I asked the dr. her stance on circumcision and woo - apparently she is not a fan...
here is the latest update to the recommendation for physicians...

The laws have changed here apparently and the boy can sue the dr up to 7 years past the age of majority - which means that drs now have to keep their records for 25 years or so... which none are willing to do so all but 2 drs in Vancouver will not circumcise. The 2 drs who do, have special insurance and may or may not cost an arm and a leg (or a foreskin as the case may be) as they do have a bit of a monopoly and can basically charge at will. Apparently only about 15% of boys in BC are actually circumcised nowadays so we also have to think of the child being different from most of his peers. We will have to re-discuss our plan in light of this new info.

My folks come down to visit on friday so I'm excited to see them and have them see all the baby crap I have bought and most of all - for them to help me build my bathroom and fix the front door. I plan on working half days next week to spend my afternoons with them and get as much done on the bathroom while they are here. Hopefully we make great headway and then I can finish it up once they leave. I need to be re-motivated and this is just the push I need to get it going on... that toilet won't install itself you know!

Stay tuned for more horrifying medical decisions...

21 weeks.. Ultrasound update

21 weeks today

We went for the ultrasound last night and holy crap was it cool. We had the nicest woman -Leanne who spent about a half hour with us showing us all the baby parts. J's first words to the woman were "is it possible to find out the sex of the baby?". Can you say - EXCITED? In J's low-key way, that was excitement. And it only grew from there. She started off scanning the head and we got to see the baby yawn twice - I couldn't believe how perfectly formed the baby is - just small. It was so neat to see the baby move around (a lot - I think I may have drank too much juice to get it moving and it wouldn't stop)... So all the parts are there and the 4 chambers of the heart, and the 3 heart vessels, and the liver, and the kidneys and the stomach and the penis.... YES, we are having a boy. I'm so excited about that. I'm so glad we found out. I was on such a high last night that I actually said - and thought that "he is the cutest baby I've ever seen"... man those mother hormones must be kicking in because I am not a baby person. I think it IS true that it's different when it's your own - and I'm so relieved. I am excited now to hurry through these next few months to get him here, outside the womb. He didn't have the manual dexterity yet to give us the finger but I swear he gave us the fist - he's got that part down already. He kept putting his arms in the way of what the tech was trying to see, it was funny. Well, funny to us, because we are first time parents and we think everything about our baby is funny - we are pathetic that way. I expect this part should get worse as the baby grows.

J is now excited about it. We had the circumcision chat at dinner (as you would in a nice italian restaurant... what do other people talk about over dinner?), and discussed more names. J wants to name the baby boy Elizabeth - Liz for short - just to make the kid tough and able to stand up for himself. Har. We laughed at that too. Maybe we need more hobbies since we tend to amuse ourselves in the lamest way.

The baby is measuring one week larger than his real dates (and I'm SURE about the dates) so I fear that as predicted, J has produced offspring that has the same gigantic head as he has. This might not bode well for the birth. Well I'm off to look at my ultrasound pictures again because I am so in awe of that tiny little perfect spine....

Ultrasound tomorrow

20 weeks + 5 days

We go for the big ultrasound tomorrow. I'm excited and nervous all at once. There is a chance that we could find out the sex of the baby - IF they will tell us. Apparently the u/s techs in BC aren't supposed to tell what the sex is but the later you leave it, the more likely they are to tell you. We could have had the u/s at week 18 but we elected to wait until now to see if they might tell us, and to get more human pictures of the baby than at week 18. J wants to find out the sex of the baby, and I wanted to wait... then he said he was going to find out, and he just wouldn't tell me... Ya right! So I decided that I would know too (this was before we found out that it wasn't really our decision). Now I'll be a bit disappointed if we can't find out - but at the same time the decision will be made for us and if we can't know, then it'll be a nice surprise on the birth day. I sort of want to wait for that day. I haven't felt any movement since last week so I'll be happy just to see Fetus moving around in there I think. Here's hoping all is well and it has all the appropriate limbs etc. Maybe I can get some idea of how gigantic the head is...
